       Due to different environmental and application conditions, the materials used for rubber seals vary, which determines the specific environments and occasions for which the developed and produced seals are suitable.
       In the industry, common rubber materials for R&D and production of seals include NBR rubber, acrylic ester, and fluororubber. Besides rubber, other materials such as silicone rubber, polyurethane, HNBR rubber, and PTFE rubber (used for seal lip parts) can also be selected.


       Food-grade rubber O-rings, simply put, are O-rings produced using food-grade rubber raw materials, primarily emphasizing environmental performance. Materials typically include NBR rubber, silicone rubber, EPDM rubber, natural rubber, neoprene, fluororubber, etc., with silicone rubber being the most commonly used. Food-grade silicone rubber is formed through the condensation polymerization of silicate inorganic polymer gel materials, composed of over 98% silicon dioxide. It is non-toxic, odorless, chemically stable, and does not react with acids, alkalis, or salts. Due to its colloidal structure with numerous micropores and a large specific surface area, food-grade silicone rubber has a pore size of about 8–10 nm and a specific surface area of 300–500 m²/g. It exhibits strong water absorption, capable of absorbing 8–10 times its weight under high humidity conditions. Thus, it can be used as a desiccant for food and external applications. Food-grade silicone rubber is a refined, non-toxic product that can be directly mixed into food to ensure dryness and consumed with food without any adverse effects on human health.

Main Applications of Food-Grade Rubber O-Rings:
1. Equipment connection pipelines, conduits, etc.;
2. Baby bottle straws, conduits, etc.;
3. Mechanical products such as bread makers, sterilizers, water dispensers, kettles, irons, rice cookers, fryers, juicers, and gas appliances; machinery, electrical, and electronics industries;
4. Connection pipes for food machinery; tubular products for food applications;
5. Connection pipes and conduits for water dispensers, coffee makers, children's sippy cups, etc.;
6. Sealing for construction, transportation, electronic instruments, and components.

Key Performance Characteristics of Food-Grade Rubber O-Rings:
1. Non-toxic, odorless, and highly environmentally friendly;
2. Soft, elastic, resistant to twisting and deformation;

3. Crack-resistant, long service life, resistant to cold and high temperatures;

4. Higher tear strength and excellent electrical properties;
5. Does not yellow, bloom, turn white, or fade when stored at room temperature; does not form scale or develop odors when immersed in water for extended periods.

Advantages of Rubber O-Rings Compared to Other Seal Types:
1. Suitable for various sealing forms: static sealing, dynamic sealing;
Compatible with a wide range of materials, with standardized sizes and grooves for strong interchangeability.
2. Suitable for multiple motion types: rotary motion, axial reciprocating motion, or combined motions (e.g., rotary-reciprocating combined motion).
3. Compatible with various sealing media: oil, water, gas, chemical media, or other mixed media.
By selecting appropriate rubber materials and formulations, effective sealing for oil, water, air, gas, and various chemical media can be achieved. Wide temperature range (-60°C to +220°C); static pressure resistance up to 1500 kg/cm² (when used with reinforcing rings).
4. Simple design, compact structure, easy installation and removal.
The cross-section structure of rubber O-rings is extremely simple, with self-sealing capabilities and reliable sealing performance. Due to the simplicity of both the O-ring itself and its installation structure, along with standardization, installation and replacement are very easy.
5. Low cost.
Hardness selection for rubber O-rings is crucial. For example, a pump turbine at a power station using 70 Shore hardness seals experienced frequent peeling and even transverse cutting. Switching to 85–90 Shore hardness seals yielded ideal results.
Lower hardness facilitates installation but may lead to peeling, installation damage, extrusion, or pressure issues. Excessive hardness complicates installation.
Typically, rubber O-ring hardness ranges from 40 to 90 IRHD, with 70 IRHD being generally suitable. Silicone rubber is an exception, usually used at 60 IRHD.
6. Wide variety of materials.
Materials can be selected based on different fluids: NBR, fluororubber (FKM), silicone rubber (SIL), EPDM, neoprene (CR), natural rubber (NR), HNBR, butyl rubber (IIR), fluorosilicone rubber (FLS), etc.
